BEIRUT, LEBANON (7:00 A.M.) – The Russian Federation retrieved and returned the body of an Israeli soldier that was killed during the Lebanese Civil War.

According to Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), the remains of Sgt. Maj. Zachary Baumel was returned to Israel after his death 37 years ago.

The remains of Sgt. Maj. Zachary Baumel, who was killed in the battle of Sultan Yaqub in eastern Lebanon some 37 years ago.

The Israeli soldier was killed during the fierce battle for Sultan Yaqoub, which ended in the Israeli Defense Forces’ retreat and an imperative victory for the Syrian Arab Army (SAA).

Following the IDF’s defeat at Sultan Yaqoub, Baumel and two other Israeli soldiers were later paraded through central Damascus on top of a captured IDF tank.

Due to the fact that Syria and Israel have no diplomatic relations, the Russian Federation stepped in to mediate the recovery of the IDF soldier.
