Mass production of the fifth-generation Su-57 fighter has started in Russia, the brochure dated to the 80th anniversary of the Sukhoi aircraft manufacturer, read.

“Multinational aviation system of the fifth generation, which has highly-intelligent onboard equipment, is barely noticeable and is also characterised by a great line of aerial targets interception and ground targets destruction. Mass production was launched in 2019 and a long-term contract was signed with the Defence Ministry for delivering over 70 aircraft”, the brochure read.

Su-57 is a stealth air superiority fighter created by Russia’s Sukhoi Company. The fifth-generation fighter jet, formerly known as Prospective Airborne Complex of Frontline Aviation (PAK FA), is a single-seat, twin-engine multirole “stealth” aircraft developed for air superiority and attack roles.

The fighter is equipped with an advanced avionics system and airborne active phased array radar as well as with a variety of high-precision weaponry.

This is NOT mass production : 76 units are to be delivered by 2027-2028. The definitive engines are not ready, even if work is in progress, the Flankers’ ones used on prototypes are underpowered and lack reliability (this is the Flanker’s major flaw) and Su-57 is heavier and has more drag so more power is required. They also still face issues with stealth which is not on par with what was expected. What is on the pipeline is what in aviation we call a pre-serie and Russia will do just like France did with the Rafale : prepare the pre-serie… Read more »

It’s not F-35

F-35 has already seen -limited- action. It’s not finished, so is Su-57, both are still troublesome and not meeting what was expected. And I agree that F-35 should be cancelled, USA should resume F-22 as heavy fighter and license build Rafale as a 5th gen replacement for F-16 : it may not look designed by Picasso or HR Giger, it has more advanced stealth, is effective and even cheaper than a F-16V or Growler. We shouldn’t had classified Rafale’s stealth for so long but advertised it as a 5th gen fighter as soon it was introduced. The terrible mistake US… Read more »

Even if it won’t ever leave the ground again..it’s all about projection of power. Russia is obliged to “operate” a 5th generation fighter plane. They probably will at the end of the next decade – or so. The finished design could also be quite different from the one we see today..

Nope, 76 Su-57 were firmly ordered. They won’t be delivered in a hurry, but they’re coming. Guess what : they don’t really need Su-57, at least no more than we’d need e.g. F-22 or F-35 while having Rafale. Let me be clear : the Russians tested a 120kg plasma-stealth system for Flanker in 2007 (in fact, they went public about it in 2007). When switched “on”, radar waves come, circumvent the object and resume their initial trajectory. The Russian scientist spoke about two issues : 1.) The aircraft glows like an X-Mas tree in the middle of a lovely ionisation… Read more »
