BEIRUT, LEBANON (8:10 (P.M.) – A massive explosion rocked Afrin city on Monday after unknown assailants targeted the main headquarters of the Turkish-backed rebels.
According to local reports, a car bomb was detonated in front of the Hekmeh building, which is the location of the Free Syrian Army’s (FSA) main headquarters in the Afrin region.
The death toll following this attack is still unknown.
This attack comes on the first anniversary of the rebel takeover of the Afrin region from the Kurdish-led People’s Protection Units (YPG).
Since capturing Afrin last March, the Turkish military and their rebel allies have turned the region into one of their main strongholds in northern Syria.
Furthermore, the Turkish military has recently announced the opening of a new border crossing that links the Hatay Province with the Afrin region’s Jandaris District.
