French President Emmanuel Macron has questioned the legitimacy of Turkey’s purchase of Russian-made S-400s claiming that Ankara, as a NATO member, technically cannot acquire the air defence systems.

Speaking in London where a NATO summit is currently underway, Macron said that stability in Europe depends on a dialogue with Moscow, adding that the status quo is not the best solution in the current state of affairs.

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump, sitting alongside French President, said he was looking at imposing sanctions on Turkey over its purchase of a Russian missile system, blaming his predecessor for not selling Ankara a US missile system.

“We are looking at it now, and we’re talking about it now,” he told journalists. “As you know Turkey wanted to buy our Patriot system and the (former US President Barack) Obama administration wouldn’t let them, and they only let them when they were ready to buy another system.”

Spat Over S-400

The United States has repeatedly objected to Ankara’s purchase of the Russian-made defence system, saying that the weapons system is incompatible with NATO security standards. Ankara insists that the S-400 systems would not pose a threat from the alliance and resisted US pressure to cancel orders.

Russia and Turkey initially signed a $2.5 billion deal for the delivery of four S-400 batteries in December 2017. An agreement for a second regiment of S-400 missile systems is expected to be signed in 2020.

Any way, with new Aster-30 NT (new technology : up to 500km range) for SAMP/T, S-400 is totally outdated, and so is Patriot. For the price of a S-400 battallion with 8 launchers of 4 missiles, you get 5 SAMP/T batteries of 6 lauchers, each with 8 missiles, and you still have money for a 1000km-range Thales GS-1000 radar added with 5 Elta EL/M-2083 airborne radars… The main problem with S-400 is technical since it can’t network to Link-16 : the Russian IADS is a proprietary system while all NATO and allies/friends to NATO gears are inter-compatible. To get any… Read more »

Exact : S-400 is nothing else than S-300PMU-3 renamed as S-400 for commercial purposes. S-300 is around since 1978… And with ZERO combat records… At the present day, the most advanced SAM and ant-air systems are from Europe (MBDA, Rhenmetall) or Israel (Rafael, IAI). The newest Patriot upgrade may be interesting, but it’s nothing else than Rafael’s David Sling under disguise and it’s MUCH cheaper to buy David’s Sling directly from Israel. Patriot may have flaws for sure, nevertheless, it has intercepted hundreds of targets in combat. Either S-300 or S-400 have intercepted ZERO! Just think about it : S-300/400… Read more »

at mort 2, all systems are constantly upgraded. S-300++ systems are highly mobile assets. That they do not deter Israel is IMHO political. You would not engage Israel in an all out exchange, while You have a rapacious Sultanate lurking North of You. And Israel acts brazenly knowing this.

That EU and Israeli system are top-notch defense is IMHO also political. Interdicting attack is more effective and we are more into defense anyway.

Stern : everybody upgrades, but in the west, we don’t upgrade with outdated tech… And it’s NOT a problem to get rid from S-300/400, especially when there are just e.g. 2 battalions divided into 4 fire-units… It may become harder once Beriev A-100 will be introduced, but, any way, F-35 can sneak into AGM-88 HARM-ER range and even Mirage-2000 would have no problem hammering the battery with SCALP… I don’t agree with you : EU and Israeli system are REALLY top-notch, and freaking impressive, and Patriot ain’t so bad : it intercepted hundreds of targets. We now know that all… Read more »

BTW, hypersonic SAMs like S-200/300/400 are not the best bet : these might be OK to fück with heavies, but when it comes to light/fast/hyper-manoeuvrable jet fighters, these are precox ejaculators…

at mort 2, due to financial constraints Russia has these highly mobile systems for all purposes. Overkill or no.

at mort 2, EU and Israeli systems are better than Patriot. Period. And Russia tries to be close. Simple reason – we are on the same continent as a potential foe. There are geopolitical reasons driving the political decisions. Big country highly mobile systems.

at mort 2, maybe reactivate your old profile or create a new one. Your posting as guest is a PIA. I know that I have currently three answers in the discussion but cannot read them because they await moderation.

Forum also does not work too well. When I am signed in, I usually have to state screen name and mail. So I suspect delays here too.
