BEIRUT, LEBANON (9:00 A.M.) – Israel is claiming that the Iranian missile fired into the occupied Golan Heights earlier this year had violated international law.

The missile used was a “medium-range surface-to-surface missile” that was allegedly transferred from Iran to Syria after January 2016; this is a violation of Annex B of the UN Security Council Resolution 2231, the Israeli Ambassador to the UN Danny Danon said on April 4th, as reported by IHS Janes.

According to Danon, the Iranian missile allegedly “flew no less than 60 km” and was equipped with a “precise warhead”.

“The [Security] Council must take responsibility for stopping these activities that continue to jeopardize the safety and security of our region,” Danon said in the letter.

As stipulated in UN Resolution 2231, Iran is prohibited from transferring any military equipment to a foreign country.

The attack that took place on January 20th was carried out by the Syrian Arab Army in retaliation for an Israeli projectile that targeted the western part of the country.

Israel has launched several attacks inside Syria since the start of the Syrian conflict in 2011 and while these strikes have often targeted sites that have an Iranian presence, they have occasionally caused some friction with the Russian military.

In particular, the Israeli airstrikes in western Syria on September 17th, 2018 resulted in the downing of a Russian IL-20 reconnaissance aircraft.

While the Syrian air defense units were the ones that shot down the Russian plane, Moscow blamed Israel for using their aircraft for cover during the exchange.
