West of Kirkuk, the Iraqi Army’s 5th Division, in conjunction with Peshmerga Forces from the northeast, attacked the Islamic State insurgents inside of the Makhmur District, killing two dozen militants before their subsequent retreat from the district towards Mosul. The Iraqi Army’s 5th Division is continuing its push northwest to the imperative city of Mosul, while the “Golden Brigades” (Iraqi Army Special Forces) engage Islamic State militants east of the Mosul Dam.

In Tikrit, the Iraqi Army successfully destroyed an Islamic State checkpoint and confiscated a cache of weapons and ammunition. Firefights were reported at the University of Tikrit, where the Iraqi Army is attempting to infiltrate Islamic State defenses.

The United States Air Force attacked multiple Islamic State installments around the province of Nineveh in northwest Iraq. U.S. airstrikes have become more frequent near the Mosul Dam and the province of Salahiddine over the last few days.
