Libyan National Army (LNA) forces, led by Khalifa Haftar, reportedly took control of key parts of the southwestern city of Sabha from rival armed militias, on Friday, including Sabha Castle and the city’s airport region.
Footage shows LNA forces in front of Sabha Castle on Saturday. Sabha international airport was reportedly destroyed during the fighting.
Lieutenant Siraj, an officer in the Libyan National Army, said: “We are thankful to everyone in Sabha city who supported the army. They are our family and we care about them,” adding that “our goal is to destroy terrorists’ strongholds and kill the armed militias of IS.”
The operation comes as part of an offensive to gain control of southern Libyan cities from militant groups.
