BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:45 P.M.) – Earlier reports that Russian military negotiators had reached a new agreement with non-ISIS militant groups based in southern Damascus to evacuate rebel fighters from the area have now been confirmed.
As previously hinted at, the new agreement will see rebel factions evacuated from southern Damascus before the defeat of nearby Islamic State forces – in fact, within a matter of days.
According to a source in the Syrian military, rebel fighters from the districts of Yalda, Beit Sahm and Babila will begin to be relocated on Tuesday.
The insurgent factions Jaysh al-Islam and Jaysh al-Ababil Huran (Free Syrian Army affiliate) will be evacuated to northern Aleppo and Daraa provinces respectively. All other rebels will be taken to Idlib province.
Finally, the Syrian Army will assume control over militant positions opposite ISIS lines in Hajjar al-Aswad and Yarmouk Camp before rebel forces evacuate from southern Damascus.
It is being done this way to prevent a repeat of what happened in Al-Qadam in March where rebel fighters evacuated first and left an empty district that both the Syrian Army and ISIS then rushed forces into resulting in a major operational defeat for the former.
