BEIRUT, LEBANON (12:30 A.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) launched a new ground assault in the western part of Aleppo this evening, a military source in the provincial capital told Al-Masdar.

According to the military source, the Syrian Arab Army’s 4th Division and Republican Guard stormed the jihadist positions at the eastern axis of the Aleppo Research Center.

The military source said the Syrian Arab Army is attempting to advance to the Aleppo Research Center in a bit to retake the entire provincial capital from the militant groups.

At the same time, a Syrian Army unit has unleashed a heavy attack on the western outskirts of Aleppo, hitting several areas under the control of Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.

The source in Aleppo said the Syrian military hit several militant targets in the towns of Khan Al-Assal, Kafr Hamra, and Ma’arat Aghrek.

Tonight’s assault by the Syrian Arab Army marks the first time in nearly a year that they have launched a ground assault to advance their positions in the Aleppo Governorate.

It is still not clear at this time if tonight’s attack is just an attempt to test the militant defenses or if they are willing to capture the Aleppo Research Center
